Asian Trade Shows – There are many companies considering exhibiting in foreign trade shows in 2009. Many have the attitude that after the show is over they will rent a car and do some sight seeing. In some foreign countries driving, even being a passenger in bus or other mode of transportation can be dangerous or even life threatening. Countries in Asia have a dreadful death rate. Being killed in a road crash can be 20 to 80 times higher in some Asian countries than in the U.S. ASIRT: the Association for Safe International Road Travel www.asirt.org is a great resource for travelers. It offers a series of Road Travel Reports which can be downloaded from the organizations website for a suggested contribution of $30 per country. I suggest anyone who is considering going to Asia, or any other foreign country, for a trade show or even vacation take the time and visit the ASIRT web site before you make the trip.

FITA Issue 200 - WHERE TO FIND COMPETITIVE INTELLIGENCE
Know Your Competitors
If you want to get established in a new market you'll need to do some competitive intelligence gathering, to see who your competitors are and what they're up to. Finding Competitive Information is a well-written article with lots of links to sites where you can find competitive intelligence. The article is a good how-to about the process of finding competitive intelligence, and the links connect to sites that are full of solid information. Some of the sites are subscription-based databases, but others are free. This is a good place to spend the initial stages of researching a market.

December 2008 Q&A

I have been told by my manager that steps need to be taken to “Go Green” if we intend to participate in trade shows in 2009. My question to you is, “Where do I start”? The company has a substantial investment in a number of portable booths already and I don’t think that it is practical to just get rid of this equipment and start all over. What say you?

Bill C. Assistant Event Planner
Pittsburgh, PA

Dear Bill:
There are a lot of companies that are considering and moving towards “going green” with their trade show effort. From the little investigation that I have done to date, there are not enough companies offering green solutions as yet. Those that do are not cheap. In some of my comparisons of booth costs you can see as much as a 30% increase in price for a green product.

My suggestion is to move cautiously and talk to as many people that you can that will give you more information about the green movement. There are many companies that say they want to be “green” but as soon as they find out some of the pricing, their attitude changes. What one client said to me was, “I want to indicate on my banner that my company is going green, but I certainly don’t want to pay for green right now”

There is a trade report produced by the Exhibitor Magazine Group called, “An Inconvenient Booth” it is a well written and gives a lot of good information. I am sure this will be of help to you.

To continued trade show success,
John Hill, Trade Show Coach

December 2008

To My Clients, Friends, Associates,
and future Clients:

It’s very hard to be enthusiastic about Christmas when you know so many people who have lost their jobs, or are about to loose their jobs because of the present state of the economy. Everyone that I know that is in business has been, in one way or another, hurt by our present economic crisis. But as Americans we have always been resilient, and we will survive this move forward and be optimistic about the future. But as one business associates said to me, “Do we have a choice”?

I was also told that because of the present down turn in the economy that sales in general will be down considerably. You could have fooled me by the number of people that were out at midnight waiting for the stores to open at Tangier Mall.

Well, regardless of what is happening, I think we still have a lot to be thankful. A friend of mine sent me a presentation called global village. These are a few of the statements in this presentation.

  • If you woke up this morning in good health, you have more luck than one million people, who won’t live through the week.

  • If you have never experienced the horror of war, the solitude of prison, the pain of torture, were not close to death from starvation, than you are better off than 500 million people.

  • If you can go to your place of worship without fear that someone will assault or kill you, than you are luckier than 3 billion (that’s right) people.

  • If you have a full fridge, clothes on your back, a roof over your head and a place to sleep you are wealthier than 75% on the world’s population.

  • If someone sent you this message, you are extremely lucky, because someone is thinking of you and because you don’t comprise one of the 2 billion people who cannot read. And so?

Work like you don’t need the money. Love like nobody has ever hurt you. Dance like nobody is watching. Sing like nobody is listening. Live as if this was paradise on Earth.

I hope that you and your family have a wonderful, safe, healthy Merry Christmas and New Year.

To continued trade show success,
John Hill, Trade Show Coach
